Bring the good things within reach

Place food, water, litter boxes and comfortable beds on the same floor. A low-entry litter box can make a painful step easier. Keep a familiar box nearby while your cat gets used to the new one.

Make a softer path

Add sturdy steps or a low ramp to a favorite windowsill. Put non-slip mats on smooth floors and soft bedding in a draft-free place. Let your cat decide when to move and when to rest.

Comfort and treatment go together

Home changes help, but they do not replace pain treatment. Your vet can recommend cat-safe medication and a weight plan. Never give human pain relievers to a cat; many are life-threatening.
