Look for a trend

Weigh your pet consistently if it is comfortable and safe. Record dates and measurements rather than judging weight from one reading.

Notice more than the scales

Ask your vet to assess body condition and muscle loss. Note appetite, thirst, stool, activity and how clothing or a harness fits.

Make changes with support

Unplanned loss or gain can have medical causes. Ask for an individual food and activity plan rather than making large cuts or adding supplements yourself.

For your cat

Weight loss in an older cat can happen even when they eat well. Ask about an exam and testing rather than assuming it is normal aging.
